Flushing queens, NYC
Flushing, Queens, NY, is the last stop on the 7 train which shoots high-speed through tunnels of orange light and swoops over rivers, then knits closely to mirrored buildings. At each stop people hop on and off- at one stop the car was packed with children, the next it was empty.
At my stop, I stepped off and knew that I was entering into something unique to my life experience. Flushing is considered to be the most homogeneous immigrant neighborhoods of NYC. It is a place that, without understanding Mandarin, is cryptic. It is Asian markets, trinket shops, and many-a pamphlet.
Between the busy shops there were long hallways and alleyways. Behind each door were four more left unexplored- and businesses were all stacked on top of each other. Flushing was, overall, a challenge both linguistically, structurally, and directionally.
But most of all, it was good, naive, disorienting fun.
